We are often asked whether we do ‘garden consultations’. One can easily be mislead by home improvement reality shows. The first scene shows the landscaping expert having a walkabout with the client. The second scene shows some work in progress. Finally there is a reveal of the final installed garden (big applause!).
A site consultation is where the landscaper can obtain more site information. We also take note of any pointers from the client in terms of what it is that they would like to have in their new garden. This may include planting styles and colours, features such as water features, a fire pit, an entertainment space, a pool, pathways and other elements that will ensure that the new garden not only fulfills the aesthetics required by the client but is also congruent with their lifestyle.
Broad strokes
It is a ‘broad strokes’ chat. It is not a detailed, actionable plan of the way forward.
A site visit or consultation may be a great way to spend some time outdoors. If you are planning on undertaking a landscape installation following such a visit, be sure that you are on the same page as your landscape designer. Such consultations are akin to discussing your house with your architect and then calling your builder to explain what they need to build. This would not turn out well.
Actionable Documentation
Simply put, without actionable documentation (ideally a design drawn to scale), there is no accurate, predictable follow-through after the consultation. The outcome is more of a gamble than a certainty.
