Autumn sees cooler temperatures arriving with deciduous trees and shrubs losing their leaves. Over the years, we have seen many clients who like nothing more than to remove their leaves from the garden floor. While this may be something that makes some people happy, it does not make your plants as happy.

These leaves work very well as mulch. Mulching is essentially the process of covering the soil surface with a layer of organic (typically leaves and tree bark) or inorganic material.

There are several benefits of mulching your garden, including:

  • Moisture retention
Mulch helps to retain moisture in the soil. In other words, it reduces the need for frequent watering. It helps to prevent plant stress during hot weather.
  • Weed suppression
Mulch can help to suppress weed growth. For instance, it blocks light and makes it difficult for weeds to establish themselves.
  • Soil temperature regulation
Mulch helps to regulate soil temperature. For example, by insulating the soil and keeping it cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.
  • Soil health improvement
Mulch can improve the health of the soil. For example by adding organic matter and microorganisms. In other words, it can improve soil structure and fertility.
  • Pest control
Mulch can act as a physical barrier. In other words, it prevent pests from reaching your plants. It follows that it can also act as a repellent for certain pests.
  • Aesthetics
Mulch can improve the appearance of your garden. For instance, create a neat and tidy appearance and use leaves as a decorative element in your landscape.
  • Reduced erosion
Mulch can help to reduce erosion. In other words, it holds the soil in place and slows down the flow of water.

It’s important to note that, when choosing a type of mulch, you should consider a few factors. These include the type of plants you are growing, the climate in your area, the soil conditions, and the appearance you wish to achieve.

A landscape designer can help you in this process.
